Sept. 11, 2012 - Rocky Gannon, a local pilot who flew
hundreds of missions in World War II, Korea, and Viet Nam, will be our
speaker.  He has spoken at the Ocean City Historical Museum and will also
speak this September in Ocean City High School.  He started flying
whenever there was an unoccupied seat in sightseeing planes at age 9, and
“was an aircraft commander of a B-17 bomber at age 19, and had never
learned to drive a car”.  After spending 37 years in the military he
became an international aviation consultant, and the director of an
airport in South Carolina.  Now he and his wife have a home near today’s
Ocean City Municipal Airport.  With such an interesting life he is sure to
be a most interesting speaker.

Oct. 9, 2012 - Dr. Ralph Boerner will speak about the History
of Fire in the Pinelands.  He is Professor Emeritus of Ecology at Ohio
State University, where he served as professor and department chairperson
for 30 years.  He is currently a resident of the Cape May Beach section of
Lower Township, and a volunteer naturalist and scientific data analysis
for the Wetlands Institute in stone harbor.  Dr. Boerner has authored over
130 papers on the ecology of dry forests throughout the western hemisphere
and is particularly well known for his work on the ecology of forest fire
management.  He is a fellow of the American Association for the
Advancement of Science and a recipient of the Oak Leaf Award from the
Nature Conservancy.  This is a timely topic following a summer of
incredible forest fires in the American West.

AppleFest - Our annual AppleFest will be held Oct. 20,2012, with a rain date of Oct. 21.  We are already arranging the food, music, crafters and all of those things that make our AppleFest something that the entire town looks forward to.  Details about past events and pictures can be found on this website.  See What's New page for fliers about the event, and our old-fashioned apple pie baking contest!

Nov. 13, 2012 - Did you ever wonder how a place got its name?  Or what a name means?  Our speaker on November 13th is Lee Ireland who wrote “Place Names of the Jersey Shore Why Did They Name it That?” Lee is a lifelong resident of the area and has many interesting stories to tell and much information to share about towns in Southern New Jersey.  > Book Link
