Reminder: Volunteers Needed for Gandy Work Day
Volunteers need to sign-up for all of the "make ready" activities in preparation for the Society's annual AppleFest at the Gandy Farmstead. The Work Day is Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, starting at 10 am. Volunteer for as many hours as you are able. Help will be needed inside and outside on the site. Bring whatever equipment you intend to use.  Contact Sonia for instructions.  609-628-3041.

SAVE The DATE - Oct. meeting, Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013: Railroad Memories - Calling all members and Society friends with a railroad connection! Many of our families came to Cape May County to work on the railroad. We are inviting you to share your Stories with us. We have lined up some train buffs to join us and it promises to be an interesting evening. There will be lots of train Memorabilia and photos on display.

WHAT A GREAT TIME TO CELEBRATE!

The Township Committee and Historical Society have joined together to produce a fifty minute DVD of the History of Upper Township. It includes a multitude of photographs, music, documents, artifacts, maps, personalities, etc., and is narrated by local township people.

The movie will be shown throughout Upper Township and Cape May County to school groups, church groups, civic organizations and many other interested groups. It also will be available on the Upper Township website.

This well packaged movie presentation describes the history of our beautiful and historic Upper Township and demonstrates the fine efforts of the Society and Township Committee.

The premier of this video will take place at the Anniversary celebration on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at the Upper Township Community Center at 7:00 pm.

Our next HSPOUT meeting will be held at the Ocean City Historical Museum on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 7 pm.  A very brief meeting will be followed by light refreshments provided by the Museum and then docents will guide us through the exhibits.  For more information check their website http://www.ocnjmuseum.org

SAVE The DATE - Tuesday. May 14, 2013

The next general meeting of the Historical Preservation Society of Upper Twp. will be held at the Upper Township Branch of the Cape May County Library on Tuesday, May 14, 2013. Refreshments are at 7 pm and the meeting begins at 7:30 pm.

The speaker will be another of our members, Bob Holden.

Program title: When Did World War II Actually Begin?

Sub-title: U.S. Imperialism in the Pacific in the late 19th/early 20th century, Teddy Roosevelt, and the Rapid Unfolding of Japanese Aggression in Asia 1898-1941.

This talk will be followed by a brief reveal about the Nanking Massacre (1937) and Japanese Atrocities committed in the Asia-Pacific War~1931-1945.

After retiring from OCIS in 2006 after 32 years (teaching fourth grade and then the Gifted /talented Program for 25/31 years), Bob Holden has been teaching history part-time as a Sr. Adjunct professor of History at ACCC's Cape May County Campus, as well as an Adjunct Supervisor of student teachers through Rowan University.

Guests are welcome at all HPSOUT public meetings.

Friendly Reminder:
Next Meeting, Tues. April 9, 2013
The general meeting will be held Tues. April 9, 2013, at the Upper Township Branch of the Cape May County Library. Refreshments at 7 pm and the meeting starts at 7:30 pm. the April speaker will be our own member, Mike Houdart. He was a friend of our recently deceased member Somers Corson and has collected his recollections of the Family Cemeteries in Upper Township in a book he calls Somers’s Tales. Remember guests are welcome at all our public meetings.
