"Great War" 100th Anniversary
Historical Society Nov.
14th program
The Historical
Preservation Society of Upper Township (HPSUT) Tuesday, Nov. 14th, 2017
program will be given by Board Member, Robert Holden.
The program will focus on the
100th anniversary of America’s Entry into The Great War in Europe.
Although this occurred in April, 1917, this program will be given for
both the anniversary and a commemoration of Veteran’s Day.
Holden's presentation will begin
with a discussion (handouts will be reviewed) about the beginning of
World War One in Europe before America’s entry and then move on to
discussing how the United States stayed out of the war as long as they
did, (due to an intense and widespread Peace Movement and President
Wilson’s 1916 re-election promises.) and just why President Wilson
believed the time had come in April, 1917 to commit American Forces to
this “Great War” on European soil.
Mr. Holden will bring an
assortment of films focusing on World War One (only clips will be seen;
not entire films):
- The
Great War (recent 2017 PBS special)
- All Quiet on the Western Front (the original
Academy Award winning B&W 1930 version of the film)
- The Lost Battalion Joyeux Noel and if time only,
various silent clips (from actual films of the day) of battlefields,
equipment, and soldiers in World War One.
There will also be assorted
helmets, weapons, artifacts and period books on display, from the World
War One period, all from Mr. Holden’s collection.
Meeting Location:
Upper Cape Branch Library, 2050 Tuckahoe Rd.
Time: 7pm
Coffee and snacks; 7:30pm, a short business meeting and the program.

Michael Houdart and Joan Berkey
in front of
the historic Gandy Farmstead
Survey Book Completed for 80
Upper Twp. Historical Buildings
On September 13, 2017, Joan Berkey, noted
Architectural Historian, presented her completed historical project to
Michael Houdart, Trustee, for the Historical Preservation Society of
Upper Township. Mrs. Berkey was contracted to survey 80 historic
buildings and sites in Upper Township. The over 350-page color booklet
represents the first time the most important historic buildings and
sites in Upper Township have been identified, photographed, described,
researched and then had their significance assessed and placed within
national, state, and local contexts.
The official forms included in the
booklet were approved by the State Historic Preservation Office and
completed for each property along with a current photo and maps showing
the location of the property in the township. The narrative portion of
each survey form include a written description, a brief history of the
building and its occupants, and an assessment of historical
significance. When available, historic photographs were included in each
survey form.
A copy of the individual survey form for each
building will be available to the owner(s) of record. Copies of the
entire report will be distributed to the Cape May County Library system
for use by all county residents. A digital version of the report will
also be sent to the State Historic Preservation Office.
The
purpose of this project is to serve: (1) local residents with an
interest in history, (2) local residents who own historic buildings and
want to know more about them, (3) decision makers at the local, county,
state and federal levels who need to assess the effect of
publicly-funded projects on Upper Township’s historic resources, (4)
students studying the township’s history and historic architecture, and
(5) local planning/zoning board members whose decisions might affect
historic buildings.
The most important goal accomplished by this
project is the increased awareness of the township’s historic buildings,
structures, and sites, an objective that merges with the Society’s
mission to preserve the township’s diverse history and educate about it.
This project is made possible in part by a grant administered by the
Cape May County Culture & Heritage Commission, from funds granted by the
New Jersey Historical Commission.

"Ocean City in the Rail Age" -
Train
history -Ocean City - Somers Point - Upper Twp.
New speaker and topic - "Ocean City in the
Rail Age" - for the Historical Preservation Society of Upper Township
program on Tuesday, April 11, 2017, 7 pm, at the Upper Cape Library
Branch in Petersburg.
Anthony Marino will present his
talk "Ocean City in the Rail Age."
His program will have maps and vintage trolley photos, in a Power Point
presentation, showing how Ocean City soon after its founding was quickly
connected to Atlantic City and Somers Point through steam railroads,
trolley lines, and steam ferry service.
Seaville was connected by
railroads to the southern end of the island and then by railroad and an
electric trolley line north to the Gardens area. This late 19th
century era of rail transportation allowed Ocean City to develop rapidly
before the age of the automobile began.
Anthony Marino received his undergraduate degree from Saint Joseph’s
University, served two years with the Peace Corps in Venezuela, and then
earned a Masters degree from Cornell University. He was a member
of the original faculty at Richard Stockton University when it opened in
1971. In 1979 he became the Deputy Executive Director of the
Atlantic City Expressway and spent 24 years with the South Jersey
Transportation Authority.
After retiring in 2003, Tony
became a volunteer for the Atlantic County Historical Society. He has
published two articles in its Annual Yearbook, one on the history of
Atlantic City Railroads and the second on the History of Atlantic City
Interurban Trolley Systems.
The
April 11th meeting starts at 7 pm with a social gathering and
refreshments. The program begins at 7:30 pm.
Meeting Location: Upper Cape
Branch Library, 2050 Tuckahoe Road, Petersburg, NJ
