Inn, 1 Harbor Rd and Route 9, Marmora, New Jersey 08223
Program: Social
Gathering 6 pm, Dinner will be served at 6:30 pm
Menu: Chicken Parmesan, Crake Cake or Prime Rib.
Dinners include a mixed green salad, side dishes, dessert and coffee /
tea. $30 per person.
HPSUT Holiday Dinner attendees
are encouraged to bring donations of non-perishable items for our local
Upper Twp. Food Pantries. ##

Park delivered the Nov. 12th program on the history of Ft. Mott and the network
of forts on both sides (and the middle) of the Delaware River that were
the
defense system for Philadelphia throughout history. Also pictured,

Coastal Defense System for
Delaware River Nov 12th HPSUT program
Fort Mott and its role in the coastal defense
system of Philadelphia and the Delaware Bay will be the Nov. 12, 2019
program for the Historical Preservation Society of Upper Twp.
Andy Grant from Fort Mott State
Park will give a presentation on the history of Ft. Mott and the network
of forts on both sides (and the middle) of the Delaware River for the
defense of Philadelphia throughout history.
Fort Mott were erected in 1896 in anticipation of
the Spanish-American War.
The other two forts in the system were Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island
and Fort DuPont in Delaware City, Delaware.

Oct. 8th Meeting – “Journey Through Time – A
Pictorial History of Egg Harbor Twp.”
The next Membership meeting for the Historical Preservation Society of
Upper Township (HPSUT) will be held Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019, 7 pm, at the
Upper Cape Branch Library.
Historian June Sheridan and photographer Lynn Wood
will present a program about their book “Journey Through Time – A
Pictorial History of Egg Harbor Township.”
The book was awarded second place by the League of
Historical Societies of New Jersey’s Kevin M. Hale Award, a statewide
competition of submitted works in 2016. The book was researched, and
along with the collecting of photos, as part of the EHT 300th
anniversary celebration in 2010.
Sheridan and Wood will present a slide show
presentation with the before and after photos from the book.

Sept. 10, 2019:
Tuckahoe Archaeology Digs
Jean Howson, Ph.D., of the NV5 consulting firm will
present a report on the findings from the recent archaeology digs in
Tuckahoe. The artifacts are from the Willets-Williams homestead site, at
the intersection of Route 50 and Route 49 in Tuckahoe and the Native
American site on the Tuckahoe River along Mosquito Landing Road.

June 11, 2019: “S. Seaville Camp Meeting The President of the South Seaville
Camp Meeting Association, Grant Karsner, presented a program on the history of South Seaville Camp Meeting, a
traditional Methodist gathering every July that was established in 1875
and still exists today. .

May 14, 2019: “Inferno at Sea”
This program will tell the true story of the cruise
ship, Morro Castle, which sailed from Cuba to New York in 1934, and
ended up in flames killing 137 people. It floated onto the Asbury Park
beach becoming a tourist attraction and a mystery. The authors of the
story: Deborah C. Whitcraft, founder and President of
the New Jersey Maritime Museum in Beach Haven; and Gretchen F.
Coyle, a well known authority on maritime history will present.
## . Ocean City’s Life Saving Station
30
Set as April 9th Program for HPSUT
The Ocean City Life Saving Station 30 will
be the program for the Tuesday, April 9, 2019 monthly membership meeting
of the Historical Preservation Society of Upper Twp. (HPSUT) at the
Upper Cape Branch Library.
The Ocean City Life Saving Station was recently
finished after nearly a decade of restoration, collection of artifacts,
and historical research. The Life Saving Service was the precursor to
the present US Coast Guard. John Loeper, the man with
the passion for preserving the station, will talk about the restoration
and Station’s history.

Mar. 12th Join with
members and friends of the Historical Preservation Society of Upper
Township for our annual covered dish – “Potluck” Dinner on Tuesday, Mar.
12, 2019, 6 pm, at the First United Methodist Church, Route 49,
Tuckahoe. This is the first meeting for the Society’s 2019 program

Potluck Dinner gathering of Historical Society members and guests is
always a popular event for our community. The Board of Trustees will

bring in items and tell the stories about their family artifact. For

Historical Society Seeks Volunteers
for 2020 Board and Committee Positions
The Historical Preservation Society of Upper Township (HPSUT) is
recruiting volunteers for Board and committee positions for
the coming year.
Consideration for Board of Trustee positions will be heard at
the Nov. 12 Membership meeting of the HPSUT, scheduled for 7 pm
at the Upper Cape Branch Library in Petersburg.
A slate of Officers and Trustees is currently being developed
for approval in the coming months.
Recruiting is also underway for various committee positions for
the coming year.
Orientation and development training will be provided in 2020
for volunteers supporting the Historical Society.
Individuals can have a rewarding impact by helping on
standing committees that meet regularly throughout the year, or
they may choose to contribute just two or three hours during
annual activities such as the AppleFest or Strawberry Festival.
The HPSUT Nominations Committee

public: the Gandy House and Farmstead, ca. 1815; the Tuckahoe

Festival Saturday, May 25th at Gandy Farmstead
The 30th annual Upper Twp. Strawberry
Festival and Craft Show will be held Saturday, May 25, 2019, 10
am – 3 pm, at the Gandy Farmstead, 26 Tyler Road (Route 616)
Greenfield.

The annual Festival
is present by the Historical Preservation Society of Upper
Township.

South Jersey strawberries will be on
sale.
-
In addition, Society
volunteers will be serving up their special Strawberry
Shortcake and ice cream.
-
A light lunch
selection will be for sale as well.
-
This Upper Township
event features a variety of handmade crafts and other items
for sale.
Volunteer docents will be on hand in the Gandy house and
barn areas with plenty of information about our historic
sites.

There will be live
music throughout the day by Linda and Ollie.

is Sunday, May 26, 2019.

Bus Trip –
May 4-5, 2019 - To Long Island Historical Sites Hosted by
Upper Township Historical Society
The Historical Preservation Society of Upper Twp. (HPSUT) , in
conjunction with Pary and Bruce Tell, will host a two- day bus
trip, in May 2019 to historical sites on Long Island, NY.
The trip schedule includes:
(Please note itinerary changes)
• Saturday, May 4th: Walt Whitman Birthplace, Huntington
Station, NY; Old Westbury House and Gardens, a magnificent Gold
Coast Mansion in Old Westbury, NY.; the Saturday overnight stay
at the Best Western, Woodbury, NY.
• Sunday, May 5th:
Visits to the Brewster House, Brewster's Tavern, the site of the
British garrison and the Thompson House (all sites from the
Culper Spy Ring, Washington's spies in the Revolution).
The price of the trip will be $235 per
person (with an additional $62 if you're rooming alone) and
includes the bus, all meals (except for
breakfast Saturday and dinner on the way home Sunday), the
hotel, and admission to all sites.
Bus service will be by Senior Travel coach with
departure points from Cape May Court House and Seaville, same as
last year.
